Western New Guinea

Western New Guinea (also referred to as West Papua, until 2000 officially Irian Jaya and previously Netherlands New Guinea) encompasses all of the part of the island of New Guinea that belongs to Indonesia (the independent nation of Papua New Guinea occupies the remainder, the eastern half) and also includes 40 nearby islands.

Culture and History

Provinces

Prior to 2003, Western New Guinea was a single province - Papua (previously known as West Irian or Irian Barat).

The division of Papua province was highly controversial and is widely disputed. The western portion (Bird's Head Peninsula and surrounding islands) is now officially West Irian Jaya (Irian Jaya Barat) province, however the status of this new province is contested and remains legally unclear.

A further split, to create a third Central Irian Jaya province, was abandoned due to fierce opposition.
