Vancouver 2010

The 2010 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver. The 2010 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXI Olympic Winter Games or the 21st Winter Olympics, will take place in 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The games begin February 12th and the closing ceremonies will be held on February 28th. Both the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being organized by the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC).

The 2010 Winter Olympics will be the third Olympics hosted by Canada, and the first by the province of British Columbia. Previously, Canada was home to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

Flights and airtickets to Vancouver 2010

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is Canada's second largest airport and is serviced by most major airlines providing daily flights connecting Vancouver with major cities across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Abbostsford International Airport (70km east of Vancouver) and Bellingham International Airport 60km south of Vancouver in Washington State) are reliever airports to YVR.

By rail

Vancouver is not well served by rail. If you wish to take the train there is limited service within Canada provided by Via Rail. Daily scheduled service is provided by Amtrak between Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, BC.

By road

Warning if you plan on driving into British Columbia from the United States during the 2010 Olympics be prepared for extremely long border delays (2-3 hour waits)

Getting to and around Vancouver by car during the Olympics is not recommended all of the venues are easily accessible by transit. Traffic in Metro Vancouver is always heavy and traffic during the Olympics is forecast to be especially bad. Parking will be hard to find as only limited parking exists and much of that will be reserved for athletes and officials from the IOC and media. The highway between Whistler and Vancouver will be open only to residential traffic, public transportation, VIP's and official vehicles.

If you do plan to brave the road Vancouver has two major highways, HWY99 and HWY1. If you plan to enter Metro Vancouver from the United States you will most likely use HWY99 (known as I5 in the USA). Be prepared for lengthy delays. If you are visiting Vancouver from another part of Canada you will travel through the lower mainland on HWY1 (the TransCanada HWY).

Buses to Vancouver 2010

Greyhound provides frequent bus service to cities across British Columbia and Canada. Quick Coach provides fast and frequent bus service between Seattle and Vancouver (including airports SeaTac, Bellingham & YVR) and usually avoids much of the border congestion.

Tours & Getting around Vancouver 2010

Use public transportation. All the Olympic venues have good access to public transportation and will be serviced by rapid bus or Vancouver's Metro system known as Skytrain. Skytrain connects downtown Vancouver with many major destinations such as YVR, Olympic Stadium, Canada Hockey Place, Vancouver Olympic Village, the International Broadcast centre and the Richmond Skating Oval.
