The west side of the island features beautiful beaches and the Bucco reef. The east side features unspoilt rainforest.

The Foreign Office has warned travellers to be cautious when renting villas in the south west of the island and advised them only to stay in hotels with tight security measures, including external lighting and a 24-hour guard.

“You should be aware that there are high levels of violent crime, especially shootings and kidnappings,” the Foriegn Office warns. “British nationals have been victims of violent attacks, particularly in Tobago where law enforcement is weak.”

Tourism to the Caribbean was dealt another blow this week after two middle-aged English women were raped and robbed at knifepoint while on holiday in Tobago.

The brutal attack, which was carried out in front of the womens’ husbands, took place in the early hours of the morning at a guesthouse in Black Rock.

It follows the murder of a Swedish couple last week and hoteliers fear it is likely to deter holidaymakers from travelling to the island just as the peak travel period approaches.

“These brutal attacks on visitors will definitely have an adverse affect on tourism,” said Carol Ann Birchwood-James, the President of the Tobago Hotel Association. She added that there had already been cancellations since the murder of the Swedish couple at their villa in Bon Accord. Up to 60,000 British holidaymakers visit Trinidad and Tobago each year.

A lot of cafes and resterants dont take European debit/credit cards, even if they have the sign in the window the main problem seams to be with HSBC cards, "the worlds local bank" not in Tobago
