Europe >> Italy >> Lazio >> Rome >> South

The South of Rome includes all of Municipi 5–13. This includes the Roman beaches, such as Ostia, as well as important tourist attractions in EUR, San Paolo, and the Via Appia.

Culture and History

EUR was built in the first years of the 1940s, close to the sea. It was built in a perfect fascist architectural style, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fascism (Mussolini got the power in 1922, becoming Prime Minister). Its name means "Esposizione Universale di Roma" (Universal Exhibition of Rome); in fact it was also designated to host the International Exhibition in 1942, but this exhibition didn't take place because of the war.

Lido di Ostia is not far from the center of Rome, it's considered the Capital's beach and it is also well-known for the "Tourist Port" with moorings for boats from 8 to 60 metres in length. Every angle of this geographic area makes you relive the sparkle of the past of the Roman coast. the archaeological excavations of the ancient port, the Necropolis Port at the Isola Sacra, the villa of Plinio and the Medieval Borgo. From the Roman period to the architectural freedom of the first years of the nine hundreds and to finish the enormous green areas, protected by the coast's State Reserve: the pinewood of Castelfusano is the summer residence of the President of the Republic and the Capocotta Reserve.

San Paolo is a residential area not so far from the center. Today hosts several buildings belonging to the RomaTRE University and a very noticeable piece of art, the "Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura" which certainly deserve a visit. For the rest is just a residential borough.
