Pondicherry (union territory)
Pondicherry is a union territory in Southern India. It consists of a number of so-called pockets in three different states:
Cities
- Pondicherry pocket -- a cluster of 11 enclaves in Tamil Nadu, containing the main town and capital of the territory
- Karaikal pocket -- an enclave further south in Tamil Nadu
- Mahe(India) pocket -- two enclaves in Kerala
- Yanam pocket -- an enclave in Andhra Pradesh
Understand
All the territories of Pondicherry were under French occupation before they were peacefully handed over back to India.
Talk
Tamil is the official language. French and English is understood and spoken by the educated elite.
Get in
Get around
The territory consists of enclaves isolated from one another, so "getting around" is somewhat indistinguishable from getting in and out of the place.
