New Guinea

New Guinea is the second largest non-continental island in the world (the largest is Greenland). It is situated in the border area of Australasia and Melanesia, and is divided into two parts:
- Papua New Guinea (Independent State of Papua New Guinea) - an independent state, occupying the eastern half of the island
- Western New Guinea - two Indonesian provinces (Papua and West Irian Jaya), occupying the western half of the island
