Miyazaki has its own airport. JAL, ANA and Skynet have regular flights from Tokyo Haneda Airport, Osaka Itami Airport and various other locations throughout Japan. By train
Miyazaki is 4 1/2 hours away from Kokura station in Kitakyushu, a stop on the San'yo Shinkansen, by taking the Sonic limited express to Beppu and transfering to the Nichirin limited express (¥8280).
The Kirishima limited express also makes multiple daily runs from Kagoshima (2 hours, ¥4090).
The Suisei, an overnight train which ran between Kyoto, Osaka and Miyazaki, was discontinued in October 2005. Now the only overnight service that runs to Miyazaki is the Dream Nichirin limited express service, which runs from Hakata station in Fukuoka and from Kokura station in Kitakyushu. You're better off travelling to Miyazaki during the day, or spend a night in Kitakyushu or Fukuoka before continuing south.
