The La Paz Department is situated at the western border of Bolivia, sharing Lake Titicaca with Peru. It contains the mighty mountain range of Cordillera Real with many popular treks and peaks for climbing. Northeast of the Cordillera Real are the Yungas, the steep eastern slopes of the Andes that make the transition to the Amazon basin. It also contains the city of La Paz, the administrative capital of the country.

There are 20 provinces in La Paz departamento. Abel Iturralde, Aroma, Bautista Saavedra, Caranavi, Eliodoro Camacho, Franz Tamayo, Gualberto Villarroel, Ingavi, Inquisivi, José Manuel Pando, Larecaja, Loayza, Los Andes, Manco Kapac, Muñecas, Nor Yungas, Omasuyos, Pacajes, Pedro Domingo Murillo, and Sud Yungas.

Cities

La Paz - the capital city.
El Alto - Formerly a suburb to La Paz, now a city of its own.
Coroico - town at the end of the "death road," with nice weather and a resort feel to it.

Other destinations

Chacaltaya - The worlds highest ski area and a popular day trip from La Paz.
Huayna Potosi - "The world's easiest 6000m peak" and a national park close to La Paz.

The region borders both Chile and Peru, to and from which there are international bus services. It's also popular to enter from Cochabamba to the east and Oruro to the south.
