Kismayo (also Kismaayo, Kismayo and Chisimayu) is a port city in Somalia.

Culture and History

Kismayo is a port city located around 500km south of the capital Mogadishu, and has a population of around 250,000. Since the former President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1992, Kismayu has been a city in constant turmoil with local war lords, the Islamic Courts Union and Ethiopian-Transitional Federal Government all vying for control of the area.

At present, the city can in no way be considered a tourist destination, and unaccompanied westerners would most likely not make it out alive. Arrival by car from Mogadishu is extremely dangerous, and arriving by sea invites risk of attack by pirates.
