Karoo

The Karoo is the semi-desert interior, located mostly in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The name is derived from one of the long gone Khoi-san languages and means dry plains.

The Karoo covers a large area of South Africa, but generally references to the Karoo is accepted to mean the Great Karoo in the Northern Cape. References to other areas of the Karoo are normally qualified, such as the Cape Karoo (also called Central Karoo) further south in the Western Cape, beyond the Nuweveld Mountains and the Klein Karoo even further south between the Swartberge and the Garden Route.
