Culture and History
Kandahar is one of the largest province of Afghanistan. It is located in the southern region of Afghanistan & a border province connecting the Southern region to Pakistan's Balouchistan province through Chaman. Kandahar used to be the capital of Afghanistan until the late 17th Century; as the economic & political Hub of Afghanistan; Kandahar has always played a major role in the history of Afghanistan; Most of its inhabitants are Pashtoons. Majority of the Afghan rulers were from Kandahar, such as Ahmad Shah Durrani, Mirwais Khan Hotak, King Amanullah Khan, King Nadar Khan, King Zahir Shah etc.
Kandahar is sorrounded by the beautiful mountains, & Ring of Rivers along side the city with the lush green gardens doubles the natural beauty of the city.
The majority of Kandahar people are engaged to Agriculture.

Flights and airtickets to Kandahar
Kandahar International Airport (IATA: KDH) now has flights on Ariana Afghan Airlines [www.flyariana.com] & Kam Air between Kandahar, Dubai every Wednesday Ariana & Monday Kam Air; as well as three domestic flights per week between Kabul and Kandahar & One Domestic flight from Kandahar-Herat-Kandahar every Tuesday by KamAir.Flights are also available by the UN & ICRC but are only open to UN staff and other approved organisations.
By car
A good highway links Kandahar to Kabul. However, passing through Zabul province is not safe. The highway from Herat is also being improved, again it is very dangerous where it passes through Helmand and Farah. A highway also runs South via Spin Boldak to Chaman then proceeding to Quetta in Pakistan, also very dangerous.

- Afghanistan International Bank (AIB) has a branch in Kandahar with a cash machine.
- Kabul Bank has a branch in Kandahar.
- Azizi Bank opening a branch soon in Kanahar.
- Western Union has several branches in Kandahar.

Kandahar is not ready for tourists yet. If you must visit (usually this will be working for an NGO) follow the security advice and keep a low profile. Suicide bombers are likely to be looking for soft targets.
