芋焼酎(Imojouchuu): A kind of 焼酎(Shouchuu), strong liquor, made from sweet potato. Imojouchuu has been made for over 500 years in Kagoshima as a traditional alcohol; it is also protected by the WTO. It tastes very rich and has a peculiar smell. Recently, odourless Imojouchuu has been produced for people who don’t like the smell. Three kinds of Imojouchuu, Mori-izo, Maou and Murao are very rare.
The local custom is to drink shochu mixed with hot water, called "お湯割り" (oyuwari).
