Jericoacoara is a small fishing village cum beach hippie mecca in Ceará, Brazil. It is located west of Fortaleza. Jeri, as it is affectionately known, is a place where pavement does not exist and there is sand under every step. It is the kind of idyllic place where many travelers end up deciding to stay for longer than they had originally planned.

Jericoacoara was voted to the best beach in the world by Lonely Planet 2004.

Jericoacoara attractions and sightseeing

The Jericoacoara beach is reputedly one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil. It is made of very fine gray sand, and is exceptionally wide and flat. Every evening you can find a crowd climbing the dunes to watch the sunset over the ocean. Because the land juts out northward into the ocean creating a westward-facing beach, Jeri is the only spot in Brasil where this can be done.

Jericoacoara nightlife, bars, clubs and pubs.

There is a very popular bar at the end of the main strip, on the left next to the beach. If you're not careful, the owner will beat you at a game of backgammon. There is also a tiny disco in the center of town which plays some gritty forró.

Hotels, youth hostels, lodging

There is only one actual hotel in Jeri and don't expect them to find you at the bus drop-off. Who will find you however will be throngs of hostel owners looking for your business. Shop around before deciding which one you will crash at for the night.
