The Greater Wellington region of New Zealand is far bigger than just Wellington city. The old Wellington Province used to cover much of the southern half of the North Island, including the Horowhenua, Manawatu, and Wanganui regions.
The region commonly (and officially, in Local Government Act terms) called Wellington includes:
- Hutt Valley, which is divided into Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt.
- Kapiti Coast, with communities of Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Otaki and Paekakariki.
- Wairarapa, including communities such as Masterton, Carterton, Featherston and Martinborough.
- Rimutaka Forest Park
