Before and up to 15th of august the locals celebrate the Mamasu fiestas. Worth seeing!
You can also do a tour to see the shaman sarcophogi in the Valley of the Dead mountains. You can arrange a tour and it's about an 1 hour hike. Really worth the trek, but make sure you are not afraid of heights!

Get out
There are kombis to Kuelap & Leimebamba daily. There are buses twice weekly from Leimebamba to Celendín, & several daily from there to Cajamarca & from there back to the coast. This means that it may take more than three days to get from Chachapoyas to Cajamarca. A kicker way is to go from Chachapoyas to Chiclayo (arriving at about 4 am) and then getting a Bus at 6am to Cajamarca (6h). Beware of robbers at Chiclayo Bus station!
