Babol

Babol (Mazanderani:باوول ,Persian:بابل) is a city in the Mazandaran province of Iran, north-east of Tehran and about 30 kilometers far from Sari. It is the region's chief commercial centre and was once the major trading center of northern Iran. The population is estimated at 204,878 as of 2005.

History

Founded in the 16th century, it was built on the site of the ancient city of Mamter. Babol was formerly called Barforushdeh and Barforush afterwards.
